How Often Should You Pump Your Septic Tank?

For some people, there's nothing quite like living in the country. The feeling of wide-open spaces, well water, and a large property that you can roam all by yourself is too appealing. Unfortunately, for those who want a more rural existence, what that also means is limited access to city services. For those people, the only plumbing system that is usually available is a septic tank.

In order for your septic tank to run properly, you have to have it pumped regularly. It's not an especially hard process; in fact, pumping and cleaning can usually take less than a couple hours and is relatively inexpensive compared to other maintenance tasks around the house. It still needs to be done though, but how often it needs to be done depends on a few factors.

How Many People Live in Your House?

A single person that lives in a tiny house by themselves in the country will rarely have to pump their septic tank. They may go five to ten years (or even more) between pumps, although it's not recommended due to maintenance issues. Conversely, a family of nine will produce much more waste, and therefore, they will need to have to schedule a septic tank pumping service more often. Other appliances, like a garbage disposal or washing machines, can add to the waste that is produced in your septic tank, as will an in-home business like a daycare or hair salon.

How Big Is Your Tank?

Septic tanks come in all shapes and sizes and can run from a thousand gallons all the way up to 5,000 gallons or more. A larger tank will obviously be able to hold more, but you also need to take into consideration regular cleaning as well. Infrequent cleanings of your septic tank can lead to premature deterioration and, eventually, replacement. Still, a larger tank allows you to go longer in between septic tank pumping sessions, so you don't have to worry about it as much.

How Efficient Is Your Home?

Leaky faucets, running toilets, and low-flow showerheads all contribute to waste that builds up in your septic tank. Making the switch to high-efficiency appliances and fixtures can help reduce your overall waste bill, as well as save you money in the long run. Also, be sure not to pour chemicals down the drain, as they can eat away at the inside of your septic tank and cause seepage into the drain field nearby.

About Me

Finding Issues With Your Septic Tank

Do you know how to find and address issues with your septic system? Neither did I until about three years ago. My wife and I had purchased this lovely home in the middle of the mountains, and it relied on an aged underground septic system. We struggled with problems like overflowing toilets and bad smells for a few months until we realized that it could be due to the septic tank. Fortunately, a friend of ours came out and showed us how to identify problems and get them addressed. I want to teach everyone a thing or two about septic tanks, so that you don't struggle like I did.
